Extreme air pollution

We had the worst air quality index Xi’an has seen for a while over Christmas. On the worst day it showed 872 units. The equivalent number in central London on the same day was 25. You can imagine how horrendous it was. The air was white and thick with sand and other particles (it’s probably better not to know what exactly). Visibility was less than a couple of hundred metres and breathing actually hurt our nostrils and made our lips tingle. Some people were being physically sick and a lot of people, including me and David, got a cough and now a very runny nose from it all.

Before it got even more hazardous.

However, the same number was at 80 yesterday morning. Dropped from 800 overnight. I am not sure if this is normal or not, but I am thankful we are no longer breathing in that much rubbish. Although, I have just checked and it is going up again.Screen Shot 2013-12-27 at 1.32.26 PM

Our school has given everyone a face mask to wear. I tried to get one by myself, but they were all sold out everywhere. I heard that they have opened the first hospital in China for people who  have been affected by smog. This is a very sad state of affairs. Developing, building, growing beautiful China with its Chinese dream is forgetting that you need healthy people in order to carry on this so called ‘development’.

In other news, Christmas went by almost unnoticed, we got our India visas and are now starting to practice our Bollywood moves.
